To install Astro Record 3.02 run the install.exe file in the installation
package. If you received Astro Record as a pkzip archive, first copy the
astrorec.zip file to a temporary subdirectory on your hard disk, e.g.
c:\temp, and unzip the archive using the shareware pkunzip.exe program.
Now follow the instructions of the install program.

Notice that Astro Record 3.02 can only be installed if the Sky
Catalogue 2000.0, Vol. 1, second edition, 1991, is present on your
system. It can be ordered from Sky Publishing Corporation, PO Box
9111, Belmont, MA 02178-9111, USA, fax +1 (617) 864 6117,
e-mail orders@skypub.com (about 30 US $).

The install program will normally try to install Astro Record 3.02 over
previously installed older versions. If you want to maintain the old
version, specify another target directory for the installation. Either way,
the installation program will copy the configuration information from the
old Astro Record version. If you install Astro Record for the first time,
default configuration settings will be installed in the astrorec.ini file. In
particular, Astro Record will assume that you use the sample station.dat file
delivered with the installation package. If you want to locate this file
somewhere else on your hard disk, you have to edit the right path in the
astrorec.ini file.
The install program will also check whether the latest version of the
Kodak Photo CD library (pcdlib.dll) is installed in your Windows
directory. If not, it is copied to your Windows directory. Note that the
pcdlib.dll v2.0 results in much better pictures than v1.0.
Astro Record is intended primarily for use in 256-color or higher graphic
modes, which are minimally required to display the high-quality images
as obtained with Photo-CD. Astro Record will perform very poorly in 16-
color graphic modes, so be sure that you select the correct graphic mode
in Windows Setup. For 24-bit video images, even a minimum number of
32.000 colors is required in order to get useful images in the
<Image/play> menu option.
Astro Record requires an IBM-compatibel Personal computer with a
version 80386SX or higher microprocessor running Microsoft Windows
version 3.1 or later. The computer must have a mouse or trackball. In
order to be able to process black and white PhotoCD images with a size
of 6 Mb, a total of 10 Mb of true extended RAM memory and virtual
"hard disk" swap memory is required. The larger the fraction of true
RAM memory the faster Astro Record will perform. Astro Record is
optimized for 8 Mb of RAM and 10 Mb of virtual memory. For PhotoCD
Professional pictures even a larger total amount of memory is required
(30 Mb, not supported by Astro Record 3.02).
For loading sequences of video images in the Video for Windows (VFW)
format (.AVI files), Astro Record assumes that the run-time VFW files
are present in the Windows system directory. These files are available
freely from various bulletin boards or by Internet/FTP at
ftp.microsoft.com. Astro Record can be used in combination with any
frame grabber that produces .AVI files. However, if the frame grabber
uses hardware compression/decompression, Astro Record can access the
.AVI files only on computers with the same frame grabber. If a frame
grabber with a proprietary software codec is used, the .AVI files can be
accessed on any computer that has the driver for that codec installed.
